Joseph P. O’Keefe is a principal with Mathis, Marifian & Richter (MM&R), who focuses his practice in wills and trusts, estate and gift tax planning, probate, trust administration and corporate and business law.

Since joining MM&R in 2002, Joe has successfully served the business and estate planning needs of clients throughout Metropolitan St. Louis and Southern Illinois. He focuses not only on the tax concerns associated with estate planning but also on the practical issues that affect all clients, independent of their estate value. His work philosophy is centered on the understanding that proper planning enables clients to remain focused on furthering their businesses and living their lives.

Before joining MM&R, Joe served nearly three years as an associate trust counsel with A.G. Edwards Trust Company FSB. His background experience also includes practicing law for four years at two law firms in the St. Louis area, and Joe interned as a law clerk for Magistrate Judge Gerald Cohn in the United States District Court, Southern District of Illinois.

Professional Affiliations

Joe is currently a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the ABA Section of Real Property Trust and Estate Law, the Missouri Bar Association and the MIssouri Bar’s Probate and Trust Law Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA), the St. Clair County Bar Association and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. Joe currently serves as the vice-chair of the Federal Taxation Section Council for the ISBA.

Community Involvement

Joe is a graduate and supporter of the Leadership Belleville program, an executive leadership program provided by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Freeburg, Illinois. Through his contributions to the Rotary Foundation, he has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International. He is also a former alderman in Crestwood, Mo.

Joe received a BA magna cum laude from Saint Louis University in 1993 and received his JD cum laude from Saint Louis University in 1996.
